Solution Heat Treatment: Overview
This softening mechanism is used to bring solute additions trapped in second phases back into solid solution. Materials after solutionising (before any further processing such as straining, ageing etc) are said to be in the T4 temper.
Aluminium alloys which derive their strength from age- or precipitation hardening (2xxx, 6xxx, 7xxx series) only can be softened by this softening mechanism.
