Factors affecting Solution Heat Treatment Time
Factors that affect the time needed to solutionise the second phase include:
  • The size of the second phase: Finer precipitates dissolve faster compared to coarser precipitates
  • The peak metal temperature (= soaking temperature): The higher the temperature, the faster the diffusion rate and dissolution of precipitates.
  • Heating rate: Heating rate will influence the amount, type and size of phases that form during heating to PMT. The heating rate may influence recovery and recrystallisation and subsequently the grain structures. The latter may influence diffusion rates of solute in the metal.
